A Uni-lateral Soft Exosuit for the Paretic Ankle Can Reduce Gait Compensations in Patients Post-stroke

چکیده
Our group has been developing soft wearable robots (exosuits) made from garment-like, functional textiles to augment healthy individuals carrying heavy loads [1] and to assist individuals who have gait impairments due to hemiparesis following a stroke [2]. We have demonstrated that an ankle-joint assisting robot can reduce the metabolic cost of walking in healthy individuals [3]. In patients poststroke, we have shown that by providing uni-lateral force assistance to the paretic ankle joint during ambulation, we can assist and improve key gait metrics such as foot clearance and paretic propulsion [4].

Biomechanical mechanisms underlying exosuit-induced improvements in walking economy after stroke.
Stroke-induced hemiparetic gait is characteristically asymmetric and metabolically expensive. Weakness and impaired control of the paretic ankle contribute to reduced forward propulsion and ground clearance - walking subtasks critical for safe and efficient locomotion. Targeted gait interventions that improve paretic ankle function after stroke are therefore warranted. We have developed textile...
متن کاملReducing Circumduction and Hip Hiking During Hemiparetic Walking Through Targeted Assistance of the Paretic Limb Using a Soft Robotic Exosuit.
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects on common poststroke gait compensations of a soft wearable robot (exosuit) designed to assist the paretic limb during hemiparetic walking. DESIGN A single-session study of eight individuals in the chronic phase of stroke recovery was conducted. Two testing conditions were compared: walking with the exosuit powered versus walking with ...
متن کاملA soft robotic exosuit improves walking in patients after stroke.
Stroke-induced hemiparetic gait is characteristically slow and metabolically expensive. Passive assistive devices such as ankle-foot orthoses are often prescribed to increase function and independence after stroke; however, walking remains highly impaired despite-and perhaps because of-their use. We sought to determine whether a soft wearable robot (exosuit) designed to supplement the paretic l...
متن کاملDesign and Evaluation of an Articulated Ankle Foot Orthosis with Plantarflexion Resistance on the Gait: a Case Series of 2 Patients with Hemiplegia
Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) have been described to have positive effects on the gait biomechanics in stroke patients. The plantarflexion resistance of an AFO is considered important for hemiplegic patients, but the evidence is still limited. The purpose of this case series was to design and evaluate the immediate effect of an articulated AFO on kinematics and kinetics of lower-limb joints in str...
متن کاملDescending neural drives to ankle muscles during gait and their relationships with clinical functions in patients after stroke.
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the descending neural drive to ankle muscles during gait in stroke patients using a coherence analysis of surface electromyographic (EMG) recordings and the relationships of the drive with clinical functions. METHODS EMG recordings of the paired tibialis anterior (TA), medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG), and TA-LG muscles were...
